Your business has transformed. Has your reputation caught up?

Utilities organisations are delivering enormous change.

Customer experience is being redesigned. Sustainability commitments are becoming measurable programmes. Technology is changing how services are delivered. Teams are solving complex operational problems and creating better outcomes for customers and communities.

But there’s a question we think more organisations should be asking:

Has your reputation changed as quickly as your business has?

You know what has changed internally. Your teams know. Your leadership knows.

But do your customers and stakeholders see and believe the same level of progress?

That difference between what you’ve achieved and what the outside world understands about you is what we call the recognition gap. It’s the central issue explored in our new Energy & Utilities Recognition Toolkit 2027.

Great work doesn’t automatically create a great reputation

It’s easy for an organisation to say it’s transforming, innovating or becoming more sustainable.

The harder part is proving it.

If you’ve transformed a customer journey, what changed for customers? If you’ve invested in sustainability, what measurable impact have you created? If you’ve introduced new technology, what became better because of it?

That evidence matters.

And when those achievements are independently recognised, they can become powerful proof points for customers, employees and stakeholders.

Recognition helps turn ‘this is what we say about ourselves’ into ‘this is what we can prove.’

You could already be sitting on a winning story

We often find the biggest opportunity isn’t finding more awards.

It’s finding the achievements inside the organisation that deserve greater recognition.

Think about your last 12-24 months.

What have you achieved that would have seemed difficult two years ago?

Perhaps you’ve improved support for vulnerable customers. Delivered measurable environmental impact. Transformed an operational process. Improved customer outcomes. Introduced an innovation that’s delivering significant results. Or you have a team whose work deserves far more visibility.

The strongest recognition stories tend to have four things in common:

Challenge → Action → Evidence → Impact

If you can clearly demonstrate all four, you could have the foundations of a compelling awards story.

Are your competitors achieving more, or simply getting more recognition?

There’s another simple exercise we recommend.

Choose three organisations your customers or stakeholders might compare you with and look at the external recognition surrounding them.

What are they winning awards for? Where are they being recognised for sustainability, customer experience or innovation? What third-party proof are they communicating?

Then compare it with your organisation.

You might discover that your competitors aren’t necessarily achieving more.

They may simply be doing more to make their achievements visible.

And that matters when you want customers and stakeholders to trust and believe the transformation you’re delivering.

Discover your recognition gap

We’ve created the Utilities Recognition Toolkit 2027 to help you take this further.

It includes practical guidance to help you:

  • identify whether your transformation is genuinely award-worthy;
  • assess the evidence you already have – and what’s missing;
  • explore three relevant recognition opportunities;
  • compare your recognition footprint with competitors;
  • understand what August’s own results data tells us about successful entries; and
  • identify achievements that could currently be going unrecognised.

If the exercise uncovers an achievement you think deserves greater recognition, you can also talk it through with one of our awards experts.

Because if your organisation has transformed, your reputation shouldn’t still be telling yesterday’s story.
